My art work is inspired by my life, my emotions, my personal interests and the people that are around me as I address issues that I deal with on an everyday basis. It is important that I am able to communicate with people my personal thoughts, feelings and to show a celebration of the close relationships and openness that I have within my friendship groups and with my partner, through combinations of text and stimulating visual imagery.
I am passionate about producing work within stitch and fabric which to me provides a comforting feel within my art work. Some of the issues that I deal with are dramatic and brash which provide a contrast to the materials that I work with. By using soft textural fabrics and threads I am able to disguise my thoughts and feelings amongst a rich detailed assortment of fabrics and layers, until examined up close and in detail. Within my work it may not always be a visual that I am attracted too, it may be an idea, concept or a comment that some one has made. The theme that seems to continue through my work is my attraction to dramatic statements, brash and individual ideas, to let people see my feelings about my intimate relationships and how I perceive other peoples personal relationships with the intention to create a rich and detailed atmosphere around my work.
As well as textural pieces, I am also intrigued by photography and how well its works when combined into textural pieces, whether it is capturing a 'memory like' snapshot, a moment in time as a visual record of our lives, in addition to being able to capture the passion and eroticism in our lives.
One strand of my art work that I am currently working on is a series of multi media stitched portraits on felt. I use distorted and abstracted photography as the base of the picture to capture the essence of the person that I am stitching. As for stitching, I use the sewing machine more as a drawing tool where I am able to create a mixture of fluid lines and random areas of free hand machine embroidered colours. I experiment with line qualities and with different types of embroidery techniques as well as threads to show the individuality and personality of the person being stitched
